Red Code

ChatGPT is Google’s Red Code

4 min

The sudden advent of the advanced artificial intelligence ChatGPT has brought turmoil to the ranks of Internet users, dividing them into several opposing camps. Fans of scientific and technological progress do not cease to admire the success of the chatbot and even use its capabilities in their work. Ardent opponents, having received another proof of the danger of new technologies, stood under the banner of neo-Luddism and demand a complete ban on neural networks. And finally, the third group, consisting of skeptical citizens, actively proves to others that the hyped ChatGPT does not really know anything yet, and you should not be afraid of it. But the truth is out there…Study, student!

Meanwhile, the ubiquitous ChatGPT, ignoring the opinion of haters, continues to demonstrate success in various fields of human knowledge. The diligent chatbot has successfully passed several exams.

BOt-doctor

A group of researchers was trying to understand whether ChatGPT could become a doctor. The trials included three stages of testing, which consist of a standard exam for obtaining a medical license in the United States.

The first part of the exam is taken after two years of study at medical school, students who have passed about 400 hours of training are allowed to be tested. Fourth-year medical students take the second part of the exam, and doctors with postgraduate medical education up to one year pass the third.

According to the researchers, the bot “very well” coped with the task. “ChatGPT passed all three exams at the threshold level without any special training. At the same time, the chatbot showed low accuracy only in the first part of the exam, which “live” medical students also consider the most difficult.

The researchers noted that a full-fledged ChatGPT doctor is still far away. However, it can be used for risk assessment, data analysis, or training. “ChatGPT has a partial ability to teach medicine, identifying new and non-obvious concepts that may not be available to students,” experts say.

And the businessman

Also last week, ChatGPT tried himself in the role of a businessman, successfully passing the exam on the MBA program “Operational Management”. Christian Tervisch, a professor at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, decided to test the chatbot and arranged an exam for it, which is usually taken by students of an elite business school.

According to Terwish, ChatGPT “did an excellent job with core issues of operations management and process analysis, including those based on case studies.” However, the chatbot had many drawbacks, due to which it could not answer the “more complex questions of process analysis.”

However, ChatGPT received a score from B to B- on the exam. Quite a good result even for a “live” student, and even more so, for a “young” neural network.

The academic world has praised the potential of advanced artificial intelligence and is trying to realize the scale of the changes it has brought to the field of education. But innovative AI has had an equally impact on the corporate world. Technology giants are now building business strategies, taking into account the potential of neural networks.

A threat to Google’s business

The appearance of ChatGPT in Google was noticed, but its capabilities were assessed rather skeptically. The company’s management argued that the chatbot could not threaten the company’s search and business model. However, after a few weeks, the concept changed.

The tech giant has acknowledged that ChatGPT poses a threat to their $149 billion search business. The company announced a “red code”.

The current head of Google, Sundar Pichai, was so alarmed by the appearance of ChatGPT that he even called for the help of the company’s founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

Recall that earlier Page and Brin left senior positions at Google and adhered to the policy of non-interference in the company’s activities, transferring all management issues to Pichai. Apparently, the threat level was so great that Google’s co-founders had to urgently return to work to save the business. Page and Brin held several meetings with Pichai, and discussed the development strategy of the company’s AI projects and measures to counter the advanced ChatGPT.

Microsoft’s multibillion-dollar investment

Who is behind the potential “killer” of Google’s business? The advanced bot was developed by the startup OpenAI, the key investor of which is Microsoft Corporation.

In 2019, Microsoft invested $ 1 billion in the startup, and in 2021 it added the same amount. And the other day the company officially announced a new multibillion-dollar investment in OpenAI. Although the exact amount of investment is not called, earlier there was information that Microsoft is negotiating an investment of $ 10 billion.

Microsoft

It’s one of Microsoft’s most expensive investments, not counting the planned $69 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard and the $26 billion already purchased by LinkedIn and $20 billion by Nuance Communications.

InvestFuture analysts note that the deal will give impetus to the development of Microsoft Azure, and OpenAI will receive supercomputers to run complex models of artificial intelligence. Microsoft plans to use OpenAI models also in consumer and enterprise products.

And that’s just the beginning…

Experts agree that the performance of artificial intelligence will improve as language models continue to develop, and the progress of neural networks will bring dramatic changes in people’s lives.

Andrew Károlyi, dean of Cornell University’s SC Johnson College of Business, is confident that the advanced chatbot has come to us seriously and for a long time and will improve day by day. “One thing we know for sure: ChatGPT is not going anywhere. If anything, these ai techniques are going to get better and better,” Károlyi told the Financial Times.

Billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban noted that artificial intelligence is not yet perfect and its answers directly depend on the wording of the questions. According to the businessman, the increasingly popular ChatGPT (based on an improved version of the GPT-3 language model) is still “in its infancy”. “But just imagine what GPT-10 would look like.”

A Word to the Creator

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, which created ChatGPT, gave an interview to journalists of the StrictlyVC project on YouTube (part 1, part 2), in which he spoke about the advantages of artificial intelligence, and also voiced the darkest scenario for the development of AI for humanity.

The businessman said that in the future, humanity is waiting for an “incredible abundance of systems that can help.” In his opinion, artificial intelligence systems will be able to resolve deadlocks and improve all aspects of human life.

Commenting on the possibility of using ChatGPT for criminal purposes, including fraud, cyber-attacks, and the spread of misinformation, Altman said that artificial intelligence must be regulated to minimize such risks.

And finally, the worst-case scenario. “I think it’s also important to talk about. In this case, AI will cause the death of all of us, “said the head of OpenAI.

However, it seems that Ahlmann does not believe in a catastrophic development of events. The businessman is more concerned about cases of misuse of AI in private situations and with individuals.
